Scouting Adventures and Opportunities

 

Scout Sleepovers

Program begins indoors in our nature museum with a lesson on the nocturnal animals of Silver Lake.

The outdoor night hike will take us through many habitats: meadow, marsh, and woodlands, in search of  creatures of the night. Testing our night vision with several activities, we explore sans flashlights. Our night adventure ends with a campfire, marshmallows and songs.

Troop then returns to the building for their sleepover and any other activity their leaders have planned.

Sleeping area is our large auditorium. Troop has use of kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator and of course, the kitchen sink. A T.V. and VCR are also available for troops use.

 Friday or Saturday Night Sleepovers Fall, Winter, and Spring. No Summers. Cost: $8.00 per person Limits: Minimum 20 - Maximum 35/40 Times: 6:30 pm till 9:00 am next day.  

 

Night Hikes

Troops can also participate in a night hike and camp fire without a sleepover.
Weeknights and Weekends available Fee: $ 5.00 per person Limits: Minimum 20, No Maximum.
(*Up to 125 people can be accommodated, if scheduled ahead as a special event.)

 

Boy and Girl Scout Merit Badges

Silver Lake offers programs to meet the requirements of certain outdoor merit badges.
From animal observation, habitat studies, biology , botany, and much, much more, that’s what Silver Lake Nature Center is for.  So Give us a call, and tell us your needs.

Brownie Try-its

 

Animals

Keep the “wild” in wildlife. What animals do and don’t make good pets. Learn about “Wild vs. Mild” animals. How not to “help” injured Or “orphaned” wildlife.  Also learn about wild animal families, Their songs and special moves.

 

Earth and Sky

Explore the “world down under”. Discover how the sun in the sky, Makes the clouds that float by, Both are needed by creatures that fly.

 

Eco-Explorer

Play “The Game of Life”. Become an animal in one of our habitats. Learn what you need to survive To keep your species alive. What would you eat? What could eat you?

 

Watching Wildlife

Analyze an Ant. Wiggle with a worm. Walk and talk with the animals. “Grocery” shop for your new “friend”.

 

Senses

Come to you senses at Silver Lake. Use your “Bloodhound” nose. See with “ten other” eyes. Make “Fox” ears to listen. Test your “good” taste.  

Water Everywhere

Do a mini pond study at Silver Lake. We have all the equipment you’ll need. Learn about the creatures you’ll see. Water you wading for? - Try-it.

Go on Safari among our trees,  See the plant & animal families, As you play the “Wild Game of Life” Learn what “pests” give them strife. Discover what adaptations are best, And learn their secrets of success.

Water Fun

Water, Water, Everywhere, All around, but none to spare. The watershed, water cycle and you, Keeping the water clean by what we do. Then a pond study to see the aquatic “Zoo”.

Wildlife

ENDANGERED SPECIES LIVE HERE! What are we doing to make their survival clear? Woodlands, Meadows, Marshes and Bogs, Come study our Birds, Toads and Frogs. We’ll discover them in their abodes, & learn their songs and modes.

Take a hike and play a game, Use your senses, it’s never the same. From protecting the environment, To careers in working outdoors, This badge will never bore.

Wildlife

Learn about our conservation efforts, And your role in environmental health. Use our forests, meadows, marshes and ponds, To choose a family group to study in depth on Amphibians; Insects, terrestrial and aquatic; or Mammals too, Are some of the topics you can do. So come join a naturalist for part of the day, Discover the wonders of wildlife as you study and play.   Requirements met: Skill #’s: 1, 2, +3;  Technology #’s: 2 + 4; Career # 3. Plus info packet to complete: Service #2.

Junior Naturalist needed for Silver Lakes’ Kids Clubs

 

Summer Enviro Clubs

Monday - Fridays 9 A.M. - 12 noon.  3 weeks in July & 3 weeks in August

 

Need older scouts willing to commit to a one week session of 15 hours each. Will be assisting with younger children. Walking the trails, games, crafts & other adventures such as pond studies, marsh walks, waterfall wanders, bog slogs, etc. All you need is kindness, curiosity, and enthusiasm with a smile.

 Service Awards

If you are a scout Be it a boy or girl and have your eyes set on a service award. If it’s a Silver, Gold or  Eagle you want to take Remember us here at Silver Lake.

 Service Projects

Earn your next rank by performing a service project. Contact us to help you develop your next project or event. Have your troop come out to participate in one of our programs. Each year Silver Lake generates a list of large projects to be accomplished. Maybe the right Community Service Project for you is already listed.

  • Cleanups: Trails; garden beds, and watersheds.

  • Trail enhancements: Interperatives to trail surfaces.

  • Field management: Removal of invasive trees and shrubs.

  • Native Species Stabilization: Removal of exotic vegetation.

  • Construction projects: In the building or out and about.

 

Silver Lake Nature Center

 It is home to over twenty Pennsylvania

rare, threatened, and endangered species.
